Description

BACKING RODS are flexible, closed-cell polyethylene foam cords used as bond breakers and joint filler materials in construction joints. They help control the depth of sealant, ensuring correct joint geometry and providing a firm backing to support the sealant during application. Backing Rods also prevent three-sided adhesion, improve sealant performance, and reduce material consumption. Ideal for expansion joints, movement joints, glazing applications, and sealing works in concrete, masonry, metal, and façade systems.

Application Instructions

  • Surface Preparation:
    • Clean the joint area thoroughly and remove any loose particles.
    • Ensure the surface is dry before inserting the rod.
  • Installation:
    • Select a rod diameter 25–50% larger than joint width.
    • Press the rod to the required depth using approved tools.
    • Ensure the rod remains undamaged and uniformly compressed.
  • Note: Do not puncture or cut the rod, as this may lead to air release and sealant failure.

Coverage Calculator

  • 1 meter of joint requires approximately 1 meter of backing rod.
  • Choose rod size based on joint width for correct compression ratio.

Suitable Applications

  • Expansion and movement joints
  • Structural and façade joints
  • Window and door perimeter joints
  • Glazing and aluminum systems
  • Horizontal and vertical joint sealing

Compatibility & Limitations

  • Compatible with polyurethane, acrylic, polysulfide, and silicone sealants.
  • Not suitable for bituminous sealants.
  • Do not use in submerged or waterlogged joints.

Safety & Handling

  • Non-toxic, non-irritant, and environmentally safe.
  • Store away from sharp objects to avoid puncture.
  • Wear gloves when installing in deep joints for safety.

Frequently Asked Questions
